Katerina

Girl, Born May 10, 2001

ALREADY TRANSFERRED, PLEASE ADOPT ME SOON!!

This gorgeous little girl needs a family to call her own!   Katerina is 7 years old, and has been living at the institution for almost 2 years.   She is HEALTHY, with no heart condition or other medical complications other than lack of nutrition and therapy.  She is able to walk on her own, is delightful and cheery, and is an orphanage favorite!    She is doing really well, considering her environment, but will absolutely blossom once she is home with a loving family.

Katerina is TINY, probably the size of a 3 year old.  Proper nutrition and activity will change that fast!  She does have some strabismus which can be corrected surgically here in the US.  Katerina does not have any siblings, so she has been waiting far too long for her own family to come for her.

PLEASE give Katerina the opportunity to grow up in a family!!   Life expectancy at these institutions is very short.  She is blessed to have lived so long, and is desperately waiting for YOU at the end of Reece's Rainbow.

"Angela", # 46

Girl, Born on December 13, 1999

LATVIA

Angela is a beautiful little girl with blonde hair and bright blue eyes.   She is almost 9 years old, but she is quite low functioning.  She has so much potential, but at this time, she is tiny for her age and functioning close to a toddler level.

From Angela's medical record, " the girl has dark grey eye color, grey hair color, she can change her body position in bed, she gets up in a sitting position, stands by holding on something, she controls abdominal exit partially, at daytime the girl goes to toilet, at night she uses pampers, the child has to be fed by spoon, her communication skills are weak, she does not talk, she reacts on her name, the girl is singleton. The child was born to a 41 year old mother from her fifth pregnancy, in her second delivery with weight of 2850g and height of 46cm;"

She does have an oval window, but is functioning well at this time.

As an older child, Angela's chances of finding a family decrease every year.   Please consider giving her the life she so deserves!

"Veronika", # 59

Girl, 7 years old

Born on April 18, 2001

LATVIA

Veronika is another Baltic beauty, with blue eyes and blonde hair.  She is described as calm and well-behaved.    She willingly performs directions from adults, and waits for encouragement and praise for doing a good job.   Veronika is very observant...she keeps a close watch on adult’s speech and action, understands directions with the help if gestures/signs, tries to imitate adult behaviors, and reacts very positively to praise.  She doesn't  like to be reprimanded.   Veronika gladly engages in contact with a known adult, is cautious in contact with strangers, can cooperate with peers, and can play common games.  Nevertheless, she plays very well on her own as well.    She  is able to act consistently and determinedly when she has a good routine (this is another common thread for children with Down syndrome).  She has difficulties "switching gears" quickly.  She can analyze and compare in a simple level, but cannot separate colors and sizes yet.  She has a small vocabulary, is familiar with the parts of the body, eats independently, drinks from a cup, observes manners at the table, dresses and undresses alone, and brushes her teeth without assistance.   Sounds like the perfect child to me!

Veronika is in the same orphanage with KYLE, # 62 at www.reecesrainbow.org/gallerylatvia.htm

Naomi (#29)

(child's name has been changed to protect their identity)

Girl, Born May 8, 2002

Miss Naomi was born via C-section with club feet and intervalvular defect II degree in her heart.  SHE HAS HAD SURGERY AND IS NOW UP AND WALKING!!

Recently, one of our families adopted a little boy with DS and clubbed feet from Ukraine.  They wanted to share this message with potential adoptive families in the hopes it will help Naomi find a loving family of her own!

"As soon as I saw that Naomi has clubbed feet, my heart skipped a beat. I pray that there is a family out there who will take the leap of faith to bring home a child with Ds AND clubbed feet. Xander has been such a blessing to our family and the journey that we are still traveling to help him overcome the obstacles of unrepaired clubbed feet, while stressful at times, has added to the blessings and the testimony of our adoption and his life.   If anyone out there is thinking about taking a chance on this little girl, please know that I have become quite the expert on clubbed feet and Ds.....and I'm always happy to talk honestly with anyone about our ongoing experience."

Natalia

Girl, Born March 5, 2002

This beautiful little girl is waiting for her family to give her the chance to really blossom.  Natalia was born with a complete AV canal, but she has had surgery and is totally healthy now.  She is not taking any medications for her heart.  She is a darling girl, but nonverbal.    She is quite low functioning at this time.  She is able to sit and crawl, she can stand with support, and can climb in and out of her bed, but she is not walking independently at this time.  She is not eating by herself either, but she certainly has the ability to learn to do all of these things in a family environment!

Please give Natalia a chance!

Lunae

Girl, Born September 2002

Beautiful, healthy little girl with brown hair and big brown eyes!   Lunae is very high functioning and actually speaks/understands two languages, including ENGLISH!

We are so blessed to finally have some children referred from this country.   Country fees have been reduced by $14k and income requirements reduced as well!!    Orphanage care is outstanding in comparison to other countries.   The children are very well loved and cared for here.   But it is still never the same as having a loving family of their own, and the advantages of being raised in the United States.

Valerie

Born October 4, 2002

"My name means RAIN"

Little Varsha is one of the prettiest little girls you will ever see!  She is 6 years old and unfortunately, has had at least 2 adoptions fall through for various reasons.  We are anxiously seeking a family to adopt her quickly.

Varsha  is  a healthy, happy little girl.

Varsha came to the orphanage in October 2002. The police had found her at a bus stand in East Delhi.   According to doctor’s assessment she was one day old.  According to the doctor, Varsha was born prematurely at 28 – 30 weeks.   Initial days she suffered from dehydration, hypothermia and neonatal jaundice and pneumonia.  Her weight during that time was 1.1kg.   She had to be hospitalised for a week Her chromosomal check showed that she is a Down syndrome child.   Bottle-feeding was introduced in the month of November 2002.   By end of November her weight was 1.75kg.   In Jan 2003, She had an ENT check due to a purulent ear discharge.   Social smile was present from the last week of January 2003. Weaning was started from 6th Feb 2003. Then her weight was 3.5kg. Varsha is vaccinated as per the schedule.

On her 1st birthday Varsha had to be carried, so she could cut the cake. She looked at the colours of decoration as if she was admiring it.

On her 2nd birthday she was able to sit with out support. The burning candle fascinated her. She didn’t show interest in her gift.

Varsha went for occupational therapy and early intervention programme regularly. When she was two and a half year old, Varsha started walking holding on to objects – side walk.   She babbled mammamma, papa etc. she enjoyed appreciation from others as she achieved these things.

On September 2005, Varsha repeated her own name.   She imitated actions and voices occasionally. E.g. patting the back and making sound resembles baby   baby.    She also started to hug and give kisses occasionally.

On the 3rd birthday she stood on a chair to cut the cake.

On 7th March 2006,  Varsha took her first 5 steps on her own!  She followed a few instructions like ‘hold the napkin’, give it back’ etc.  She was able to use a spoon to feed herself with ice cream.

She started going to a special school in April 2007. She enjoys her school.  On holidays it looks like she missed her school.   She spends 5yrs in the school.   5 days a week.   Varsha loves to dance.  She also loves to drum on her toy drum or tables etc.   She has beautiful silky hair.   She helps in dressing up and wearing her shoes.   She follows instruction most of the time.

She shows affection. She seeks attention. She loves to be carried. She needs big hugs from her caregivers.

At present her weight is 14kgs; height is 100.5 cms and HC is 44cms

Varsha is going to be a blessing to any family who is able to adopt her.   She is clearly doing well in a "family" setting, loves school, and will be able to adjust quickly to her new adoptive family.

This gypsy beauty has brown eyes and black hair.    She is severely delayed, and is in desperate need of a loving family environment and focused attention on her skills development.   She shows little interest in the world around her, and needs an opportunity to get out and about with people who believe in her ability to learn and function semi-independently.   Her medical records indicate toxic ephritic damage, esotropy, rotator nystagmus, OD-hypermetrophy, and OS-myopia.

Kristina has been in the orphanage since birth.  She had the benefit of maternal visits for the first 3 years of her life, but her mother has not visited since 2002.  She is going to be such a wonderful daughter for a very deserving mother!!   She is healthy, with no medical conditions noted.

Ngan is a beautiful little girl who is already 8 years old.  She was referred to us by a family who traveled and adopted from her orphanage recently, and they inquired with their agency about working with RR to seek a family for her!

Ngan is a very active, happy, little girl.  She is also HEALTHY, with no heart conditions or other serious complications from her Down syndrome.  She does have some strabismus, but this can be corrected with glasses or surgery.

Girl, 7 years old

Born on March 16, 2001

This blue-eyed, blonde-haired beauty needs a loving family to thrive in!   Natalija is described as active and friendly.  She doesn't like to be told "no" or be reprimanded, and cries as a result  (aaahh, girls!).    Natalija likes to play games with her peers, even if she doesn't quite understand the rules.  She is friendly and responsive, and is very loving towards her caregivers and friends.   she is very good at playing independently and focusing on the task in front of her.  She is stubborn sometimes, but I have found that this is a common trait of children with Down syndrome!   Natalija does have a few words and basic self-service skills.  She can dress and undress without help, and also eats and drinks unassisted.

Olena

Girl, Born May 4, 2002

SIGNIFICANT RISK, PLEASE ADOPT ME SOON!!

Olena is a gorgeous little girl in desperate need of a loving family!  Olena has blonde hair and blue eyes, a beautiful, round tomato face and a smile that can light up a room.   Regrettably, she also has a significant heart condition which has led to pulmonary hypertension.  It is possible that she is not a candidate for surgery, but we wanted to share her here and give her the same chance as all of our children.  Olena is quite low functioning at this time, from her environment, but also from her medical complications of fears of the staff to not let her do too much for fear of "losing her".    But she is able to stand on her own now, and with help she will walk on her own some day!  She is blessed to have been kept at the baby house for so long, but with her heart condition, she will not survive the institution.  ;((

One family who visited with her in February of 2008 has this to say about her:  " I would describe Olena as starved for human contact.  She would become extremely excitable when we held or tried to play with her.  This got us thrown out of the groupa’s room as much as anything.  She loved to touch my face – especially my eyes.  She was able to stand while holding onto the sides of her playpen.  She had a few toys but showed no interest in them.  The staff did change them – there were never the same toys in the playpen when we saw her.  She watched the other children insistently.  She is very low functioning – really much like a baby.  She would do best in a home where she was the youngest or had many healthy, older (by several years) siblings.  It would take time and patience to develop a bond with her - but she is very sweet.  Medically, we observed that she was terribly congested.  The orphanage staff said she really needed T&A surgery but her heart would not allow for this.  She gasped for air, snorted very loudly trying to clear her throat, I think and made a sort of growling noise as she got excited.  She had lower muscle tone but not so low as I would have expected.  She could take a few steps with her caretaker holding her hands and pushing her feet a bit.  She was very small boned – I noticed her hands were constantly moving.  She sucked on her hands and left some teeth marks.  The staff explained her heart condition to our interpreter who then called her personal doctor and asked her to explain exactly what they meant and what the prognosis was for Olena.  Irina became very upset and explained that what they were saying was that Olena needed to have her heart repaired and that they had attempted to do this on three occasions but each time her pulmonary hypertention was too high to be able to do this.  They also said that she needed to weigh at least 20kg before they could attempt it.  ( I thought this meant that they had not even attempted to fix her heart until she was much older and that the damage had long since occurred) The staff said her “blood flows in reverse” – Irina had her doctor explain this several times before explaining this to us.  We were told it meant that in an effort to sustain her, her body was forcing blood back through her lungs. "

Without a US evaluation, it is impossible to know for sure exactly what Olena's prognosis is.  It is possible that she will only be with us for a short time.  But God does not intend for her to die alone....He created Reece's Rainbow to serve as  a voice for these children who are often forgotten.   Olena counts too!   I hope someone out there who is experienced with these challenges and has the local resources at home to at least try to help her will step forward and commit to being Olena's family, even if it only for a short while.  Like Daria (Emma) before her, she will blossom like a flower....you have all the seen the transformations of each of our children once they are home!  Only God knows if she is meant to be with us for a short time or a long time....but she deserves to know she is loved, to be held and cradled and rocked and know the love of a mother that she has never known.
