Latvia is one of the least known Eastern European countries processing international adoptions. Like Estonia, Latvia is a former Soviet state. It is located on the Baltic Sea, and borders such countries as Russia, Estonia, Belarus, and Lithuania. We have waiting children available in all of these countries. It is southeast, across the Baltic Sea from Finland. Children with Down syndrome are available from 8 months to 16 years old. Most are Caucasian and Scandinavian-looking, with blonde hair and blue eyes. Depending on the region, children speak Latvian and sometimes Russian as well.

Adopting a child from Latvia is very much like a pregnancy...the excitement of seeing your child's face for the first time is thrilling!

Available children are grouped by the orphanage they reside in. This makes it possible for families to adopt more than one unrelated child in a single adoption trip.

Boy, Born on June 16th, 2001

LATVIA

This handsome young man has big, beautiful, brown eyes and dark hair. He is very sympathetic and sensitive. He is very calm and laid back, and is not easily bothered by things going on around him. At this time, he still has no language skills. The doctor recommends continued physical, speech, and occupational therapy. Nikolajs has four brothers and three sisters. The family gave him to the orphanage at birth. It is very sad to know this child was given away when he could have had a loving family :(( But God has other plans for Nikolajs, and those include becoming part of YOUR family.

Gunars, # 2

Boy, Born on June 8, 1999

LATVIA

This handsome young man is almost 8 years old. He has grey eyes and dark hair. Gunars is described as very active, mobile, and social. He loves affection and personal contact. He needs continued physical therapy, as he does not walk on his own yet. This could be from lack of PT, or from being stubborn! He moves by crawling, gets up on his feet by pulling up on furniture. Despite the fact that he doesn't walk, he is very mobile! Based on the the doctor's observations, Gunars does not talk, does not understand language, and would be considered severely delayed. The only way to know this for sure is to have him seen by a US doctor.

Gunars was born with a heart condition. Doctors recommend a gluten-free diet, ferment therapy, vitamin therapy, remedial gymnastics, massage, surveillance of physiotherapist, ergotherapist and orthopedist

Boy, Born on November 11, 1998

LATVIA

Lukas is 8 years old, and has blonde hair and blue eyes. He is described as calm and joyful. Even at 8, he is still trying to master walking, but with continued physical therapy and lots of "encouragement", he will get there! He is able to feed himself but still needs some help in staying focused. His receptive language is very good, but he does not speak yet. Lukas was born with a heart condition.

Lukas has two younger brothers who are also available for adoption, if you might be interested in adopting as sibling group. However, Lukas CAN be adopted separately.

LATVIA

Valentins is a very handsome young man with blue eyes and dark hair. He is a calm and quiet boy who does not speak yet. He is in need of continued speech and global therapies. He does verbalize some things, but not words. Doctors observe that he does not understand language and does not react to his own name, but this can only be confirmed by a US doctor and family observations. Many children with Down syndrome have "selective listening" skills....this doesn't mean they don't understand you, it means they are ignoring you! Valentins is not potty trained yet and is still using diapers. He is able to eat by himself.

Valentins is considered significantly delayed. He has asthma and is allergic to dairy products.

Olegs, # 22

Boy, Born on August 10, 2004

LATVIA

Olegs is a precious little boy with blue eyes and blonde hair. He is described as emotionally stable and positive. He is calm, and loves affection. He is able to crawl and sit and play with toys. he is making good positive progress, and will respond very well in a loving, family environment with continued therapy. His medical record indicates a microdefect of scrag septum and renal damage. In 2005, Olegs was diagnosed with acute myeloblastic leukosis. He has undergone chemotherapy for this and is doing very well now, despite his other medical complications.

Boy, Born November 7, 2003

My name means "Bearer of Christ"

Kristaps is a 4 1/2 year-old-boy with light blue eyes and light hair, and Down syndrome. He needs help with eating and walking. He is not yet talking and is much like a baby at this time.

Little Kristaps has hypothyroidism (low thyroid, common with DS) which is taken care of with a daily synthroid pill. He has celiac disease which means he must have a gluten-free diet, and he is anemic. Kristaps was also born with a heart defect A(ASD) and is followed by a cardiologist; he will need surgery in the United States.

"Gabriels" (# 66)

Boy, Born on April 27th, 2001

LATVIA

? Our man Gabriels is ever so handsome, with blue eyes and light brown hair. He is described as calm and kind natured. He loves one-on-one time with adults, and is very loving and affectionate. He does not like sudden changes in the environment around him, but this is typical of children with Down syndrome. He loves to be held and played with and hugged. Gabriels does have a heart condition: ASD, a double departure from the right ventricle, and stenosis II of the lung arteries. He does have some hearing loss as well.

This gypsy beauty has brown eyes and black hair. She is severely delayed, and is in desperate need of a loving family environment and focused attention on her skills development. She shows little interest in the world around her, and needs an opportunity to get out and about with people who believe in her ability to learn and function semi-independently. Her medical records indicate toxic ephritic damage, esotropy, rotator nystagmus, OD-hypermetrophy, and OS-myopia.

Doctor recommends continued therapy and sessions with the opthalmologist.

Daina is a precious little 4 1/2 year old girl with blue eyes and blonde hair. She is a very happy and content little girl. She is active and energetic. She does not have a heart condition, but seems to be allergic to cow's milk.

Ooh, I love babies!! Little Vilis has grey/blue eyes. He must be bald yet because they didn't list any hair color! Apgar 7/8 points. The cord was wrapped around his neck at birth. He shows several common signs of Down syndrome, including the low tone and space between the large toe and the second toe (I don't know about you, but I love that space! Reece's has the best PIGS!!) Vilis also has an oval window, which should be followed once you get home.

Boy, 3 1/2 years old

Born on December 4th, 2003

SIGNIFICANT RISK, PLEASE ADOPT ME SOON!!

Teodor is a gorgeous 3 year old little boy! He has bluish-grey eyes and blonde hair. He is described as very outgoing, friendly, energetic little boy, who is happy most all the time. He shows initiative in communicating with adults and peers, and is emotionally well-balanced and calm. Like any three year old, he knows what "MINE" means! He plays well independently (I love a child who can entertain his self), but he also plays well with other children. They will roll a ball to each other, and try to catch with each other. He is able to walk on his own, and is doing very well with his gross motor skills. He is able to recognize his adult caregivers, makes emotional contact with a known adult, recognizes his name, differentiates intonations, imitates gestures, operates with objects according to their aim (rolls a ball, pushes a car), can build a tower from several blocks, shows interest about new toys, can act determinedly, to attain a result (for example, tries to unfasten shoe cords). Like many children with Down syndrome, he loves things that are repetitious, like shoe strings and things that dangle. At this time, he does not know the names of body parts, but understands simple directives, which are complemented with gestures. He understands the meaning of the word ?no?. His language skills are weak, but he does vocalize a lot. He cannot dress himself, but he can eat with assistance.

"Veronika", # 59

Girl, Born on April 18, 2001

LATVIA

Veronika is another Baltic beauty, with blue eyes and blonde hair. She is described as calm and well-behaved. She willingly performs directions from adults, and waits for encouragement and praise for doing a good job. Veronika is very observant...she keeps a close watch on adult?s speech and action, understands directions with the help if gestures/signs, tries to imitate adult behaviors, and reacts very positively to praise. She doesn't like to be reprimanded. Veronika gladly engages in contact with a known adult, is cautious in contact with strangers, can cooperate with peers, and can play common games. Nevertheless, she plays very well on her own as well. She is able to act consistently and determinedly when she has a good routine (this is another common thread for children with Down syndrome). She has difficulties "switching gears" quickly. She can analyze and compare in a simple level, but cannot separate colors and sizes yet. She has a small vocabulary, is familiar with the parts of the body, eats independently, drinks from a cup, observes manners at the table, dresses and undresses alone, and brushes her teeth without assistance. Sounds like the perfect child to me!

Girl, Born on February 5, 2005

This little girl has dark green eyes and dark brown hair. She is actively crawling but still not walking independently yet. There is no indication of any other medical complications in her record. She is considered relatively low functioning, and will need a loving family who can give her all the love and attention she has been missing!

Born March 22, 2004

This precious little boy has platinum blonde hair and bright blue eyes. He is just SO cute!! He is described as joyful, smiley, and he laughs all the time. He cries very seldom, sleeps very well, and loves to play with his toys. He is doing very well and is a very happy child. He has a twin sister and an older sister, but those children are not available for adoption. He has had the benefit of appropriate medical care, and even benefits from speech therapy!
