| The Schafer-Litchfield Family--Vestal, NY
Christina and Matt Schafer are college sweethearts and the very lucky parents of four beautiful biological children – Cade, 4 ½, Parker, 3, Macy, 1 ½ and Dawson, 5 months! The saying ‘If you think my hands are full, you should see my heart” rings very true for this family! Christina is a stay at home mom and Matt works in insurance and is also finishing his PhD in American History. Their days are busy but wonderful and they are enjoying watching their children grow up as best friends. Adoption was something Christina and Matt talked about from the beginning. Matt’s aunt runs an adoption agency and both of his cousins were adopted. Their talk of adoption was put on the back burner when they had their first baby together, but with Dawson’s birth it brought a renewed interest and eventual determination to realize this little dream. Dawson was born with Down syndrome and though that one little fact is not the biggest part of who he is, it is a fact that has forever changed the course of this family’s future. He has been the greatest inspiration and source of joy since his arrival and his parents have become his best advocates and hope to advocate for other kids with this misunderstood but incredibly life-enhancing condition. It is for that reason that their long-ago musings of adoption have led to their hope to adopt precious little Angela in Eastern Europe. In desperate need of major heart surgery that babies born in the U.S. would receive by 6 months old, Christina and Matt realize that this journey might still have a tragic outcome. But as Dawson has taught so well in his short 5 months, however scary the unknowns of a situation, love says forge ahead! 9/5/08---DOSSIER SUBMITTED I have $1061.14 in my FAMILY grant fund towards the cost of my adoption! Jason and Carolee are hoping to adopt our little Maja in Serbia! She has been waiting quite a while, but we were blessed to get some wonderful new photos of her from our first adoptive family in Serbia, the Bedfords, and it took all of 5 minutes for the Spradleys to know she was the one after that! The Spradleys have been married for 14 years. Dad is in the US Air Force and mom is home full time. They are currently staioned in Spokane, WA. They have one daughter named Piper who is 19 months old and also has Down syndrome. Jason and Carolee struggled with fertility issues for 12 years, but Piper was God's gift to them and an answered prayer too! Maja is the special one! The family is so excited and anxious about this new venture and trusting that the Lord will provide and bless them with this special girl. 8/19/08---DOSSIER SUBMITTED!

Sergei and Gillian Marchenko met over thirteen years ago when Gillian was on a year long mission trip to Kiev, Ukraine. Sergei was the interpreter who worked with her American team. Fast forward a few years and you find Sergei and Gillian married, both graduated from Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, IL and headed back to Ukraine for long term ministry with their two daughters, Elaina and Zoya. The Marchenkos church-planted with ReachGlobal (formerly the Evangelical Free Church of America – International Mission) in Sergei’s old neighborhood. In 2006, Polina, the Marchenkos’ third daughter was born in Ukraine with Down syndrome. They moved back to America to utilize health care and early intervention for Polly. Now the family lives on the north side of Chicago where Sergei pastors a church and Gillian keeps busy with the girls’ schedules and freelance writing. The Marchenkos are excited that God has given them the desire to add to their family through international adoption. God willing, they hope to adopt Evangeline (Veronica) from Eastern Europe. Elaina (8), Zoya (6 ½ ) and Polina (2 ½) can’t wait to meet their new sister who’s just six months younger than Polly! DJ and McKenna Powell are hoping to adopt Larisa (Reese) from Eastern Europe. Larisa was born in December 2007 with Down syndrome and a cleft lip and cleft palate. Her cleft lip and cleft palate will be repaired as soon as she comes home to her forever family. DJ and McKenna have been married for nearly 6 years and have two beautiful children, ages 4 and 2. Their daughter, Darah has Down syndrome and has inspired them to adopt another child with Down syndrome. DJ works for an insurance company and McKenna is a stay at home mom and student studying Speech Pathology. They are strong Christians who feel honored to be given the opportunity to adopt a child. There is nothing more symbolic of Christ's love for His children than the beauty of adopting a child. DJ and McKenna appreciate your prayers and your financial support in their adoption process. | The Duffy Family--Pittsburgh,
PA
Sean and April Duffy are so excited to be adopting our little Tina from Eastern Europe. She is already 5, so we are thrilled that she will have a family now.
Their adoption journey happened by chance. They have always been interested in children with Down syndrome. Then a dear friend of theirs sent them an email attachment about a little girl in desperate need of a forever family. They had received other emails about adoption, but this email really stuck out. As soon as they saw the picture of Tina they fell in love! She is a child with Down syndrome and has been waiting for a home for 4 years!
After some thought and prayer, the Duffys decided that they wanted Justina to come and live in their family. They have three biological children, Hannah 12, Aidan 9, and Julian 6. They can’t wait to have a new “little sister”! Sean and April know that financially the road will be long. But, they know in their hearts that they can offer Tina loving home. She will have all the educational and medical resources available to her. She will just blossom in her family!
Adoption from this country is quite costly, so your financial support of the Duffy's adoption of Miss Tina is greatly appreciated. They are just in the beginning stages, but she has many relatives and friends waiting to meet and support her! Thank you for your help! 9/17/08---HOME

Rob and Amy met on the church playground and married 20 years later. They have 4 children (2 boys, 2 girls). Rob works in law enforcement and Amy is an elementary school teacher turned stay-at-home/homeschooling mom. Their journey with Down Syndrome began in December 2003.
For the first 8 ½ months of pregnancy several ultrasounds showed a healthy baby girl. Two weeks before Amy’s due date with their second child, the doctor found fluid in the baby’s lung. An hour later another doctor confirmed the fluid and added an AV canal defect and a short femur. Two days later a specialist informed Rob and Amy that the baby would have severe Down Syndrome and would not live to the due date. He said that even if the baby survived birth, it was so sick it would live only a couple of hours or maybe days. “The baby will never walk, talk, eat or even breathe on its own,” the specialist said. He then offered an amniocentesis to confirm the diagnosis and told Rob and Amy that they would need to “take care of it” quickly before labor started. The specialist assured them that abortion was the best option because no one should have to have a baby with so many problems. During this conversation, the nurses and the genetics counselor noticed the baby in Amy’s tummy moving all over the place. It was as if Lexi was saying, “Hey! I can hear you. I’m still alive. Give me a chance!” Rob and Amy declined the amniocentesis and informed the doctor they would not abort their baby. They were then sent to a cardiologist.
Lexi was born three days after Christmas. She stayed in the local hospital for five weeks before being airlifted to another hospital. When she was 2 ½ months old she came home with a g-tube and a lot of medication. Over the next few months she survived RSV, heart surgery and a few medical errors. At 5 ½ months old, she was home to stay.
Lexi is now 4 ½ years old and thriving. She began to walk independently a little over a year ago. A few months ago, she started really talking (a lot!!!). She knows ASL, loves to sing and dance, and is determined to learn to read. She is a walking, talking, smiling miracle from God.
Rob and Amy first learned of special needs adoption shortly after Lexi was born. They decided that whatever Lexi’s outcome would be, they would pursue the adoption of children with DS. This is their first experience with adoption. Rob and Amy fell in love with Angelina the moment they saw her. Won’t you please partner with Rob and Amy in prayer and support to bring Angelina home soon? 9/9/08---HOME STUDY BEING UPDATED I have $120.63 in my FAMILY grant fund towards the cost of my adoption! |

Adam and Amy Boroughs are pursuing the adoption of precious Ruslan from Eastern Europe. Having 7 children already, they were confident their family was complete. However, they saw Ruslan's picture and he melted their hearts, and knowing the hopeless future he faced without a family, they felt called to make him their own.
Four of the Boroughs' children joined their family through the miracle of adoption, and they have always been drawn to those children with special needs. They know firsthand the joys of raising a child with Down Syndrome as they have two sons from Hong Kong who are "chromosomally enhanced". Adam is a nurse and Amy is a stay-at-home-mom, and this fourth international adoption is a real step of faith. They are trusting that the Lord will provide the necessary funds to bring Ruslan home. | The Polen Family--Redlands,
CA
Timothy and Elizabeth
Polen are hoping to adopt our little Olga. They have
stepped up at the last minute to save her from the institution, as she
is already 4 years old and blessed to still be at the baby house.
The Polens have been married for 18 years and currently have been
blessed with two daughters, Sarah age 13 and Emily age 11. Their
youngest daughter Emily was born with Down syndrome. Timothy is a
manager for a GIS software company and Elizabeth is a stay-at-home-mom.
Timothy is also a Worship Leader at Trinity Evangelical Free Church and
often leads worship for Light and Power. Light and Power is a class
that ministers to adults with developmental disabilities. Elizabeth is
also involved in Bible Study Fellowship and currently has the privilege
of teaching bible stories to four and five year olds once a week.
Emily was a big surprise for them because they didn’t know that she was
going to be born with Down syndrome and later to find out, Autism. She
has taught them a lot, especially of Gods unconditional love. She has
had several surgeries and through medical difficulties she taught them a
lot. One is that she is a fighter and she should be valued despite her
disabilities. She has brought them great joy! She is perpetually happy
and enjoys going out especially to church where she is involved with
Kings Kids. Kings Kids is geared towards assisting children with
special needs and inclusion into the church family. Big sister Sarah is
overjoyed that they are trying to adopt Olga and can’t wait for her to
be at home with them.
They both knew there is a call to care for the vulnerable and needy.
This journey began when God used an expose on the mistreatment of
special needs adults and children to grab their hearts. One little girl
specifically, her name is Katarina. God used Katarina to open their
eyes and hearts to the needs of those that cannot speak for themselves.
They took the leap of faith by inquiring as to Katarina’s whereabouts
and the possibility of adoption. As they discovered more, they could
not turn a blind eye to the incredible need to care for one of these
special children. God was definitely at work. When it became evident
that there was the inability to locate her they wanted to adopt Olga.
Although it broke their hearts that it is not Katarina that they are
trying to adopt they believe that God used her to accomplish His purpose
and plan for their lives. They are so excited that He would entrust
Olga into their care and give them the privilege of watching her grow
and meet her highest potential.
Because it is God that gives us eyes to see, ears to hear, hearts to
love and feet to take that step of faith we are trying to adopt Olga. We
welcome all to join us in our journey to adopt Olga. We appreciate your
prayers and donations as we take this leap of faith together.
“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of
all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly. Defend the rights of
the poor and needy.” Proverbs 31:8-9 (NIV)

| The Tysick Family--North Tonawonda, NY
Single mom, Cindi Tysick, hopes to adopt our Srecko from Eastern Europe. While Srecko’s home country doesn’t normally allow single mothers to adopt, Cindi is confident that they will realize that Srecko’s home is with her and Cindi’s adopted 4-year old daughter Mara. The journey to Srecko has been a long one. It started when Mara first came home almost 3 years ago and Cindi received a call from her agency about another little girl from Eastern Europe with the same special need. Cindi felt compelled to adopt the then 3 year old and add to her new family. But a halt in the country’s adoption process and problems with state documents delayed the dossier by almost a year! In the end the referral was not for the little girl first discussed, but rather a little boy with special needs too physically severe for a single mother to handle. Devastated, Cindi declined the referral and looked to another country. Within a month she had found a little boy from Russia with the same special need as Mara. Seeing this as God’s opening another door, she began the process of redoing the dossier for another country and making the switch with INS. In record time the dossier was done and sent to the new agency. Two weeks later Cindi was again called with devastating news, the little boy was taken into foster care and no longer available for adoption! What was God trying to say? Was there to be no second child? No sibling for Mara? With a heart full of love to give Cindi talked to her pastor. After praying on it and listening to God Cindi went back to the Reece's Rainbow website where she had first seen little Srecko. But Srecko was only available to married couples. Taking a leap of faith (which may have been what God wanted her to do all along) she contacted Reece's Rainbow to verify that single mothers could not adopt Srecko. Miraculously the coordinator for the program said that just last year the ministry allowed 3 single mothers to adopt. After reviewing Cindi’s motivation to adopt letter and biography the program coordinator felt that Cindi and Mara were the best family for Srecko. Now she awaits the decision of the Ministry, but in the meantime Cindi is trusting that the lesson to be learned from the last two failed adoptions was that she was not to look for a child with the same special need as her daughter Mara. God had a different set of special needs she was to learn about and a very special daughter she was to nurture and watch bloom into her full potential. As you can guess the cost of getting almost halfway through 2 adoptions has depleted this single mother’s adoption savings but where there is a will there is a way. Any contribution you can make to this journey will be greatly appreciated by two extraordinary children and one very grateful mother. 9/7/08---DOSSIER SUBMITTED I have $110 in my FAMILY grant fund towards the cost of my adoption!Follow the adoption journey of the Tysick family on their blog at http://www.adoptingreka.blogspot.com/

Paul is only one month younger than Owen, so it will be like having twins. Having Josie has opened their eyes to the wonders that children with Down syndrome can add to a family. It has made them realize their dream of adding another angel to their family. Brigitte is actively involved in their local Designer Genes Down Syndrome Group. Joe and Brigitte, along with three other families started this group 4 years ago, which is now a non-profit servicing a good portion of Northeastern Iowa. Joe works full-time as a Foundry Quality Control Specialist and while Brigitte spends most of her time staying at home with the kids, she does work very part-time for the Iowa District Court System. | The Adamson Family--Rapid City, SD
John and Traci Adamson are hoping to adopt our little Slava! He has been waiting for so long, and we are so happy to know he will have a family of his own. The Adamsons the parents of 5 beautiful children, 4 girls and a boy, ranging in ages of 11 to almost 2. They live in Rapid City, SD, where they moved to in 10/07 for the clean air and according to God’s calling, as John is helping to start a church. They have had a heart for adopting for quite some time, because God brings believers into His family through adoption, but the timing was not right until now for this move. At first, the idea was for a child who needed a home, but their hearts were moved by special friends who had adopted a child with severe disabilities that the Lord would have them adopt a special needs child. They heard about Reece’s Rainbow, and the Lord gave everyone in the family a desire to reach out and rescue a child who had no hope and provide him a loving family. Early on their son (who would already love to have a brother) had a special interest in Slava, which has been contagious! They are excited to welcome him into their home and share the love of Christ with him. God has already worked in some wonderful ways, and they look forward to the blessings that this adoption will bring to their lives and others. 10/15/08---HOME STUDY IN PROGRESS I have $0 in my FAMILY grant fund towards the cost of my adoption! |
| The Torres Family--East
Stroudsburg, PA
The Torres' have been married for 15 years. Early in their marriage both had similar burdens for adopting orphans. Their pursuit of adoption was postponed by having 6 biological children of their own. Amelia, their 5th biological daughter has Down syndrome. Since experiencing the blessings of having a child with Down syndrome, their adoption interests changed to orphans with Down syndrome, especially overseas. In 2005 they successfully adopted Yulia, from Russia, a 2 year old girl with Down syndrome. Yulia is thriving in her large family environment, which provides plenty of stimulation. The progress she has made is both exciting and rewarding for each family member. The Torres' continue to have a burden for children with Down syndrome and are currently pursuing two little girls who can grow up as sisters. The Torres' view adoption as a joint ministry with all who make adoption possible, especially those who give. Because of the cost of adoption, fund raising is a necessary element to their adoption pursuits. They would like to thank in advance all who give to make this adoption possible; you are truly a blessing. Religion pure and undefiled with the God and Father is this, to look after orphans and widows in their tribulation--unspotted to keep himself from the world. Doug and Cara Layne are hoping to adopt our precious little Melanie from Serbia! They first became involved with orphans from Ukraine in 2005 through a hosting program. After hosting the same little boy for 3 summers, their hearts were set on adopting him. With paperwork sent to Ukraine, and a SDA date in hand, they received word that the little boy they had fallen in love with went home with his birth mother. Heartbroken, Cara and Doug knew that God had lead them to Ukraine for a reason, so continued to follow the Lord and traveled to Ukraine in October of 2007. God’s gift to them came in a small package—a 3 year old “Anya” who weighed just 16 pounds, born with Cerebral Palsy. She is now thriving in her home environment and is the joy of Doug and Cara’s life. Cara is a special education teacher. Her youngest sister; Amy; has Down Syndrome. Cara knew Doug was the one for her when he loved Amy as much or more than he loved her! Wanting to adopt again, Cara and Doug were planning to adopt a child with Down syndrome, but fell in love with Melanie and have committed to bring her into their family. Both Cara and Doug know that the road ahead is a long journey, but with the support of the Lord, family, and wonderful friends, all things are possible. “TK” is a single mom of three daughters. She is hoping to add Ngan from Vietnam to their family! The program in Vietnam will close very soon, so we are thrilled to know that Ngan will be able to get out before that happens. TK has two biological daughters who are 23 and 17. Her youngest daughter is 4 years old and was adopted from China. She was adopted as a waiting child with a cleft lip and palate, has had four surgeries including palate repair and lip revision, and has fully transitioned from Chinese to English as a primary language. She is a child that glows with happiness and joy—she can’t wait for a new sister to play with! TK works full time at a higher education institution as a financial director. For fun, TK likes to quilt, garden and hang out with her daughters. TK enjoys many activities with her girls including playing board games, reading books, attending concerts and theatre productions, working on crafts, traveling on vacations, picnics in the park, biking together and gardening in the sun. TK and her family live on acreage in the country and can often see deer or hawks out the window while eating a meal together. TK contributes to the community as a licensed foster parent and is an active member in her home congregation. Ngan will be the fourth daughter in their very close and loving Christian family. International adoption is costly, but even more so as a single parent on one income. This family is having to gather their papers very quickly to submit their dossier before Vietnam closes down. The Taylors are hoping to adopt one of our very youngest children from Eastern Europe. They are a military family currently stationed at the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY. Scott is a Major in the Army and teaches American Politics while Heather is a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor but is currently a stay-at-home mom. They have a beautiful 4 ½ year old daughter named Brynn and 3 Labrador Retrievers (one of each color)! Scott and Heather met while attending college at Rutgers University. They have been married for almost 12 years. Heather has worked with individuals with disabilities since high school and has always felt in her heart that she would like to adopt a child with Down syndrome. Together, with Scott and Brynn, they found Ani and knew she is the one to complete their family. This is the Taylors’ first adoption experience. Scott, Heather and Brynn are eagerly looking forward to bringing Ani home to provide her with a family that loves each other. 10/10/08---DOSSIER COMPLETE, INS APPROVED I have $680 in my FAMILY grant fund towards the cost of my adoption! |
