Gage (31)

BOY, born November 26, 2005

SIGNIFICANT RISK, PLEASE ADOPT ME SOON!!

Gage is a very intelligent, happy, and affectionate young man!

From his medical records:    Cerebrospinal partial Aplasia of the lower part of the spine, partial hypoplasia of pelvis bones, contracture of femurs/thighs/hips and knees.  Likely common diagnosis of Caudal Regression Syndrome/Sacral Agenesis.

From his caregivers:  crawls on his hands, talks simple sentences, well oriented in colors and forms and objects, eats independently.  Very smart and handsome little boy with great potential, in great need of a loving family to understand and take care of his medical needs.   If anyone is considering adopting Gage, here is a website you should see:

http://www.johnnyeckmuseum.com/

Johnny Eck had the same condition as Gage. He led a full and rich life, and even though his ways of making aliving is controversial, we have to remember that the times were different then. Anyway, this man made lemonade out of the lemons life handed him. How wonderful if he could be an inspiration for someone to pursue adopting Gage.

UPDATE!  (June 2010).  Gage is blessed to still be at the baby house.  He is facing the institution this year.   he continues to develop well cognitively and socially, and he is well loved at his orphanage.   From his caregivers:  The child cannot walk, he can sit comfortably and moves around with the help of hands, operates the wheel-chair very well, talks, sings, knows poems, letters, eats himself.

From an adoptive family who visited with him in August 2010:  "I saw Gage again today.  He is so precious and full of life! I can't stress enough he looks happy and healthy!! I can't bear the thought of him facing the institution, someone please come for him!   He is a little ray of sunshine, that boy. Always looks so happy and really gets around well - whether it be moving himself around on the ground to play or pushing himself in his wheelchair. Her really lights up everything around him! "

UPDATE, April 2010:    Vadim was taken to Kiev for surgery to prepare him for an eye last month....it seems they cannot do it all at once but they had to make a hole for it and put in a 'placeholder' for an eye...they will gradually enlarge it until the space is big enough...this should have been done when he was a baby but since it was not it will take time to make a space for the eye big enough.  He will go again in May.

Our missionary there who knows Vadim well tells us he is very smart and friendly, and will do well in a loving family.

Phillip (24)

Boy, Born April 1, 2005
This handsome, blue-eyed boy is officially diagnosed with CP.  He does have strong facial features of FAS as well.   (Fetal Alcohol Sydrome).  He is not able to walk at this time, and has the most difficulties with his lower extremities.  But he is a loving and affectionate boy who can achieve so much with therapy and a loving family.  He is blessed to still be at the baby house, and is facing the institution.  Someone please consider Phillip for your son!

From an adoptive family who visited with him in May of 2010:   "Wow, what a beautiful little boy.  Look at those eyes and dimples!  He is not walking, but trying hard to pull himself up using his arms.  He is not speaking. The Director commented on what a beautiful and sweet little boy he is."

If you are unfamiliar with FAS, please spend some time researching this condition.  Just as with Down syndrome, FAS and FAE have a wide variation of effects on each child, both medically, physically, and cognitively.   This is typically dependent on how long during the pregnancy the mother consumed alcohol, and of course, how much.   There is no way to know this ahead of time.
I have $1.60 in my grant fund towards the cost of my adoption!

Iyan  #32-1

Boy, February 03, 2006

Main diagnosis: Stabalized hydrocephalus
Developing in normal range for children his age

Iyan walks & runs long distances, climbs on the Sweden wall, jumps and goes through tunnels independently.  He unbuttons buttons, folds a page of paper, fits smaller objects in bigger ones. He enjoys playing with balls, blocks and cars. He eats independently & washes and dries his hands on his own. He can dress & undress independently and take his shoes on and off by himself.  He is completely potty trained and will announce his needs to go to the bath room on his own. He speaks in simple sentences, identifies objects and asks appropriate questions. He knows the names of other children and staff and calls them by name. He memorizes songs and poems and tells imaginative stories. He is described as observant, initiative, and inquisitive. He initiates a contact with adults and children and responds well to praise from the staff. He does have one adult that  he is particularly attached to and demonstrates that he can attach, bond and trust, as proved by this relationship. He is attending kindergarten in the local community.

Farley

Boy, DOB: April 17, 2005
Main diagnosis: Delays in development-
suspected to be on the Autism spectrum (no official diagnosis)

Farley has unique needs and prefers individualized attention. He can sort by color, shape and size. He enjoys putting pieces into a shape sorter and can draw horizontal lines, vertical lines and circles. Farley’s therapists suspect that he is on the Autism spectrum. This is not a confirmed diagnosis at this time, but he does have many of the characteristics of a child on the spectrum. He has echolalia speech, prefers to play away from the other children and at times seems to be “in his own world”. He does not often respond to his name or any other attempts at interaction. He participates in repetitive play. He does have some speech, but it is imitative and repetitive. He only verbalizes when prompted by therapists. He avoids eye contact.  He will tolerate physical touch and will sit in his therapist’s lap and cuddle briefly. He is not demanding and does not have any behavior problems. He eats independently and is in the process of being toilet trained.

Dmitriy  (4)

Boy, Born December 26, 2005

SIGNIFICANT RISK, PLEASE ADOPT ME SOON!!

Little Dmitriy may not be able to see you, but he can hear you and feel you and wait for you to come for him.  He is 4 1/2 years old and was born with only one eye and the other is blind.  He is blessed to still be at the baby house, but is facing the institution soon.

Dmitriy has been listed with us for nearly THREE YEARS :(((   We are so glad to have an updated photo of him and greater opportunities at this orphanage.

From his medical records:  multiple congenital abnormalities of the central nervous system and facial bones, congenital cleft hard and soft palate, microcephaly, congenital cataract (leucoma) to the right, anophthalmos to the left.   He is blind.

One of our adoptive families who visited with him in March of 2008 says this of him:  "  This little guy is very much still a baby, but has very little chance of being adopted because he has no eyes.  He was responsive to the caregivers and liked the security of their arms."

This new photo is from October of 2009, when Dmitriy was visited by our facilitation team.   He is doing amazingly well, considering the fact that he can not see anything at all.  He is able to stand on his own now and is very active!     There are many families out there hoping to adopt a blind child, maybe Dmitriy will find his "forever family" at the end of Reece's Rainbow!

Johnny

Boy, Born January 20, 2010

Johnny was born with Apert Syndrome, which has many other associated conditions.
Johnny has a cleft palate, choanal atresia(nasal blockage). His echocardiogram indicated that he has an ASD, 2 small defects that do not require medication at this time. He will see a cardiologist again in the fall.
His hands and feet are fused. It is possible that this can be surgically corrected. Photos of both hands are available. He does have a distinct thumb and pinky finger on his right hand.
A CT scan of his brain was done in February 2010 and the results are available for interested families.

Johnny is receiving therapy every day and is already showing signs of good development. He’s rolling over on his own and pulling the tube out of his mouth (proof that he can use his hands!). He has recently begun to take food by mouth. He previously had a feeding tube.
We will continue to receive updates on his development as he grows.
ADDITIONAL PHOTOS AND MEDICAL RECORDS ARE AVALIABLE
Johnny’s situation is unique. He lives in a country where he cannot be adopted until his first birthday.
However, his social worker knows that he will not be adopted in his own country and because of the Apert syndrome, they are actively seeking out a family that can adopt him as quickly as possible to address his medical needs. His birth family has already surrendered their parental rights and his paper work is being done quickly for international adoption. The agency is seeking a family that can start the adoption process and be paper ready to travel in January, when Johnny turns a year old.

Ted  #1-2

Boy, DOB: November 5, 2006
 Main diagnosis: Goldenhar syndrome:
incomplete development of the ear, nose, soft palate lip, and mandible on one side of the body;
Cleft lip and palate; Congenital cardiac malformation

Ted’s heart cannot be repaired in his birth country.

Mild mental lagging behind with good dynamics

Ted is developing well for his age. He has good visual coordination, good gross motor skills and good fine motor skills. All are appropriate for his age. He picks up small balls and drops them in and gets them out of a bottle with narrow opening, fits in rings, builds a tower with 5-6 blocks, leafs through the pages of a book. He listens to musical toys and is very interested in how they work.  He scribbles within the limits of the paper.
He can point to his body parts, plays hide and seek and plays with toys appropriately. He has a very good attention span.He is patient and cooperates during games with other children. He makes good eye contact, laughs when teased and likes to cuddle.
He answers to his name and attempts to pronounce words. However, at this time, he primarily communicates his wants by using gestures. He sleeps well, enjoys shower time, feeds himself independently with a spoon and is in the midst of potty training (will sit on the potty but does not say when he needs to go).

He demonstrates appropriate skills for his age in all aspects of his development (except speech).

Ted has a heart condition that is inoperable in his birth country. His heart is on the left side of his body (as it should be) but, the main vessels connected to the heart are in the right side of his body. This is a condition called Situs inversus with Levocardia.
He currently takes medication for his heart.

All of his other organs are in the correct location in his body.
Medical report is available for review.

Burke  (35)

BOY, Born December 12, 2007

Burke is so handsome, and is doing very well despite his cleft lip and palate.  No documented cognitive delays, but some of his facial features are consistent with FAS (Fetal Alcohol Syndrome).   We are working to learn more of his social history and abilities to determine if he may have other challenges besides his cleft issues.  But he is darling none the less and needs a loving family!  He is able to walk and is quite independent!

Sullivan was born with a very rare disorder called Arnold-Chiari Syndrome.  He is not able to walk, but is very smart, although his speech is delayed.    He is not able to walk at this time due to a hip deformation, resulting from his A/C syndrome.    He does not speak too well, says seperate words, definitely understands when he is talked to and wants attention. He uses his hands well, plays with toys, can concentrate, he is very sweet and always smiling. I know caketakers just love him and think he is better developed than the rest in his group.

Justin  (35)

BOY, Born June 27, 2008

Justin is one of our youngest children available, and has what we consider *minor* special needs.  His only medical records indicate a congenital cleft palate.

Although it is not documented and not 100% for certain, Justin does have some minor facial characteristics of FAS (Fetal Alcohol Syndrome).  This is just a cautionary disclosure, so families are prepared and open to the challenges of FAS in the event this is the case.

Xavier  (18)

Boy, Born October 21, 2007

This darling boy was born with FAS.  (fetal alcohol syndrome).  He is such an affectionate little boy, and will thrive in a family setting.   He is academically delayed, but active and social and doing pretty well.    As a result of his FAS, he does have a heart condition (atrial septal defect), which has caused him some respiratory difficulty at times.  It is not documented that this is pulmonary hypertension, but the sooner he can have surgery for his heart, the better he will be, regardless.

Also known as Acrocephalosyndyldactyly Type Chotzen or Saethre-Chotzen Syndrome. Chotzen Syndrome is a dominant genetic condition. They have a tower-shaped skull (acrocephaly), fused fingers and/or toes (syndactyly), asymmetric face, widely spaced eyes, droopy eyelid (ptosis), strabismus (crossed or "wall-eyes"), beak-like nose, small upper jaw, and jutting out lower jaw (prognathism).   Some plates in their skull close early.   This is called craniosynostosis.   Often people with Chotzen Syndrome are mildly hard of hearing. Sometimes they're unusually short.   Occasionally the closing of the plates in their skull can compress their brain and slow their development.   Sometimes boys with Chotzen Syndrome have undescended testicles.

Boy, Born November 24, 2006
Andriy is an active, happy little boy with blonde hair and blue eyes.   He is nearing 4 years old and needs a family quickly!   He was born prematurely, blind as a result.  He does seem to have some vision in his right eye, but his left has a full cataract.   He is very active, able to walk and get around, sociable with his friends and caregivers.   He is mildly cognitively delayed due to his prematurity, but has so much potential in a loving family!

From his medical records:  microphthalmia in both eyes, retinopathy of prematurity in both eyes

Arthur (18)

BOY, born September 6, 2005

Arthur is a happy little boy who really wants a family of his own!  He is healthy and active!  Arthur was born with a rare condition called Aarskog syndrome

I have $0 in my grant fund towards the cost of my adoption!

Nicholas (18)

BOY, born November 9, 2006

Nicholas is officially diagnosed with FAS (fetal alcohol syndrome).   His delay is considered significant.  He needs a loving family to help him achieve all he can be.    He does not appear to have any asdditional medical complications from his FAS.  This picture makes him seem to have vision problems, but I think it's just a bad picture.

Peter

Boy, Born May 24, 2006

Eastern Europe

Peter has been diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD). He takes medication daily. He receives speech therapy and the therapist reports that he is making progress with communication. His attention span has increased and he will participate in guided tasks.   His psychologist lists his development as moderately delayed but believes that a part of this delay is attributed to his environment.  He can walk, run, climb stairs, and throw a ball. He loves playing outside. He can feed himself and assists with dressing himself and brushing his teeth. The staff believes that a lot of his problems are due to his dislike of constantly being a part of a group of children.  He understands and follows simple directions and responds very well to individualized attention.
Medical information and additional photos are available.

From a staff member who met Peter in April 2010:
I observed Peter for over 15 minutes. He was very calm, very compliant and was very sweet during our interaction. I observed him during lunch time and he was eating an orange. When he was done, he attempted to communicate that he wanted more. He used gestures and sounds and was able to get his point across. His speech delay seems to be his biggest issue. I did spend time observing him in an attempt to notice any sensory issues or anything related to the PDD. He did not like it when the juice from the orange ran down his arm. But, he expressed his displeasure with a noise and holding up his hand and then wiped his arm off all by himself. He was able to feed himself, clean up the area around him and sat calmly during the meal. He followed directions given by the caregiver .

Medical report, additional photos and a short video clip of Peter are available.
Steven (9)
BOY, born May 30, 2007

This little one is SO cute!   Wispy brown hair and giant brown eyes, Steven is HIV positive and has fetal alcohol syndrome.   His records do not indicate any medical complications (thank goodness), but he does bear significant facial characteristics of FAS.   Steven is described as a sweet and affectionate  boy.  he is perfectly mobile with no physical delays.   He is still quite young, so academic/cognitive delays have not been documented as of yet.

Edwin  (9)

Boy, Born July 11, 2006

SIGNIFICANT RISK, PLEASE ADOPT ME SOON!!

Edwin is a handsome little boy with dark hair and dark eyes.   He was born with Goldenhar Syndrome.    This is a very rare condition, and is accompanied by several additional medical complications for Edwin.    His medical records indicate:  congenital nervous system malformation - internal obstructive hydrocephalus, subcompensated form, rickets, mental delay, right micropsia, acoustic meatus atresia - Goldenhar syndrome, delay of physical development.  This little boy needs SURGERY to relieve his hydrocephaly and a family who will love him and save him from certain death in a mental institution.     He  is already 3 1/2 years old, and is on his countdown to transfer :(  And regrettably, he can not be adopted from the place he will be sent.  Someone please save Edwin!

UPDATE:   surgery for a shunt to relieve the pressure in his head is scheduled soon!

*** Due to the severity of Edwin's needs, families interested in adopting this child in particular must be HOMESTUDY APPROVED before an official match or commitment can be made.***

Eddie  (9)

Boy, Born August 23, 2006

Sergey  (9)

Boy, Born October 15, 2007

This little monkey has a whole host of medical complications, but he is so darling and will surely perish if he is not adopted.   He will end up in an institution, bedridden for his very short life.  :(  Please consider Sergey!

From his medical records:  secondary post-hemorrhagic obstructive internal hydrocephalus, spastic tetraparesis, convulsive disorder, mental disorder as a result of organic affection of brain, additional chord of the left heart ventricle, partial optic atrophy, congenital nystagmus, crossed eyes, delay of physical development

Regrettably, this orphanage is one of the poorer ones, with very little outside aid and very little hope.    All of the children are tiny and undernourished.  These children are immediately transferred at 4, and have little chance of survival where they are sent.  All of our waiting children need families, but these have a critical need.  Please consider one of these children soon!!

Kenneth  (11)

Boy, Born November 27, 2006
Photo dated Feb 2010.   Kenneth is a blonde haired, blue eyed cutie who was born with FAS.    Kenneth does have some spasticity on his left side, and will greatly benefit from therapy and a loving family to encourage him!   He is diagnosed with hydrocephaly, but this is a result of the FAS.  He is not in need of a shunt to correct (the doctors say).

As you can see from this updated picture, Kenneth is doing GREAT!  He wants a mama and papa of his own.

Shaun (etkf, Region 3)

Boy, Born November 2007

This darling little boy is waiting for his forever family.   He struggles with significant cleft issues and facial deformities.   He also struggles with kidney problems.   From his medical records, they indicate that he has Edwards Syndrome, also known as Trisomy 18.    This is quite a challenge, and most children do not survive past birth.   We do not know if he has any of the other complications, but he clearly has many of the facial features and cognitive delays.

Maybe there is a super special family out there who will give Shaun a chance to really shine, and be all God intends for him to be!

Austin  (16ka1-3)

Boy, Born June 2006

This darling little boy is waiting for his forever family.   He has very unique facial features, but I am unfamiliar with the condition that causes these.    One of the possible diagnoses we have been made aware of *may* be a form of Russell Silver Syndrome  (RSS).   This most recent photo shows he is growing well, and seems to be active and relatively happy.   After what we learned about RSS, it seems much more likely than the previously supposed progeria, which is good for Austin!   Please consider adopting Austin and helping him be the best that he can be!   There will never be a place for him in his country outside the walls of an institution, just like our children with Down syndrome.

From his medical records:  Spastic tetraparesis, motor disorders, convergent squint, hip dysplasia, anemia

His muscles are very tight, and he will need significant amounts of therapy.  He is not able to sit by himself, and is dependent on his care givers for just about everything.    He has a secondary myocardiopathy as well.   Quite a laundry list for such a darling boy ;((   Anthony will be sent to a mental institution, and will remain bedridden the rest of his short life.   He is blessed to still be living at the baby house, but he will be transferred in teh Spring.   Please give Anthony a chance to know a loving, supportive family!   Don't let him end up another statistic :(

Little Kiril was born with microcephaly (a small head) as a result of FAS (fetal alcohol syndrome).    He is considered significantly delayed.    He has brown hair and brown eyes, and so desperately wants to know life outside of this orphanage.   He is a darling little boy, and the orphanage director would so love to find a family for him soon.   He is able to stand, and can walk with help, but his speech is very delayed.   With therapy and a loving family and educational opportunities, Kirill has so much potential in life!
